Changing opinion
An exercise I have been running in my head when I disagree with someone, is to convince myself that they are right. The game starts at the end:
I now know that I am wrong. What are the steps that led me to reach this conclusion?
I have done this exercise twice this week and it actually changed my mind on both circumstances. What I found is that this only works if I believe in two things: a) I am dealing with smart people b) their point of view was made in good faith. The first point puts my mind in a state of “they are likely seeing something I don’t”. The second point makes me believe they are not playing devil’s advocate, rather they are earnest about their position.
