🌳 New Opportunities TLDR

Despite the current environment in tech, I have decided to resign from my position as Head of Engineering at Vital. I am now looking for a new role. I am currently focused on managing humans, but I am equally proficient as an IC.

What I am looking for:

  • Ideally at a growth stage, that requires teams and processes to scale.
  • Flexible schedule, where what’s important is work delivered, rather than time spent in the office/online.
  • Working with empowered product teams.
  • Working with ambitious engineers that want to become better at what they do.
  • Individuals and teams that are accountable.
  • Pragmatic approach to technology.
  • Ideally remote, but hybrid can work from London, UK. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

As a manager…

  • Led a team of 30 engineers, during an hyper-growth phase - from 110 people to more than 1200. This team was made of individual contributors and other managers. I am proud of building a world-class team and not having lost a single engineer (100% retain rate) throughout my 3 years tenure in a high intensity environment.
  • Saved closed to a quarter of million pounds on recruitment referral fees.
  • Involved in multi-million projects, like NHS 111, GP@Hand, the Prudential parternship and Telus.
  • Experienced managing frontend, backend and dev-op engineers, across multiple squads.
  • Experienced working with customers directly and doing sales.
  • Experienced at defining processes, best practises and setting an engineering culture of excellence.

As an IC…

Some recommendations I received

I’ve had the opportunity to see Rui in action both as a peer and as his line manager, and I can confidently say that he is an exceptional individual who made invaluable contributions to the organisation at the time. Rui played a pivotal role in the growth of our mobile engineering teams and the enhancement of our product and technical standards. His proficiency as both an engineer and a leader was evident to all who worked with him, earning him profound respect from his team and peers alike.

Simon Attard Engineering Director

Rui played a pivotal role in scaling our iOS engineering team from a few members to about 30. He was extremely supportive of his team scoring the highest NPS satisfaction scores in the business. He engaged in technical projects when required, and worked with me on all sorts of process changes as we grew the mobile team.

Sakis Kaliakoudas Engineering Manager

Rui is not only highly motivated, but he is also incredibly detail-oriented. He consistently demonstrated a keen eye for detail, ensuring that every aspect of our projects was meticulously executed to the highest standards. His commitment to excellence was truly inspiring, and it had a significant impact on the success of our team.

David Rodrigues Lead Engineer

Being a software engineer himself, he has an innate ability to connect with his team, understand the intricacies of our work, and acknowledge the challenges we face. It’s like he’s one of us, knowing exactly what we’re going through because he’s been there, done that. This made a huge difference in making us feel valued and understood. He’s also got this practical mindset that reminds us all why we’re doing what we’re doing. It’s not just about coding for the sake of coding, but about solving real problems and building stuff that matters. And when we get too caught up in the weeds, he’s the master at pulling us back, keeping us focused on the goal ahead.

Gabriele Angeletti Senior Engineer

Working alongside Rui helped me realise the positive impact of building a team that prioritises candour and trust. Rui is an exceptional engineer, and excels at being a manager. He builds and leads strong engineering teams as he talks with frankness and clarity, whilst still maintaining empathy.

Samuel Crosland Product Lead

I was instantly taken with Rui’s pragmatism and result orientation. He’s incredibly focussed, and frequently looks to work with Product Managers, Product Designers, and execs to ensure the most high-leverage work is being done. He keep’s the user value, and business impact in mind and focusses the team through support, and candour.
